Data journalism contest accepting entries [Worldwide]

Journalists working for media companies and nonprofit organizations, freelancers or individuals can enter a competition.
The third edition of the Data Journalism Awards (DJAs), run by the Global Editors Network (GEN) and sponsored by the Knight Foundation and Google, has been launched with a EUR16,000 (US$21,990) prize to be shared among eight winning entries.
The awards include the following categories: story or group of stories on a single topic, data-driven investigation, data journalism visualization, data journalism application or website, data journalism portfolio by an individual, data journalism portfolio by a team or newsroom, entry from a small newsroom, and jurors’ choice.
Submissions can be made in any of eight categories, must have been published or aired after April 10, 2013 and must be in English. Entries in languages other than English must be accompanied by a translation of the work.
The award ceremony will take place in Barcelona during the Global Editors Network Summit, an annual event hosting 500 editors-in-chief worldwide.
The deadline is April 4.

Cardiff University offers community journalism course [Worldwide]

Anyone with an interest in journalism and connecting with their communities online may participate in this course. No previous experience is required.
Cardiff University's Centre for Community Journalism, in conjunction with the FutureLearn initiative, organizes this five-week, massive open online course to help reporters gain practical skills and insight into hyperlocal journalism.
The course will cover topics like the core principles of journalism and current developments in hyper-local reporting in the digital environment. It will also address more practical topics, such as setting up a community website, identifying and building an audience, creating content and managing an online community.
The course begins on April 14. Registration is free.

NED offers grants for media projects [Worldwide]

Independent media organizations, civic groups and associations can apply.
The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is seeking proposals from nongovernmental organizations, including independent media worldwide, for projects that advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions.
NED encourages applications from organizations working in diverse environments including newly established democracies, semi-authoritarian countries, highly repressive societies and countries undergoing democratic transition.
Grant amounts vary depending on the size and scope of the projects, but the average grant lasts 12 months and is around US$50,000.
NED is interested in proposals from organizations for nonpartisan programs that seek to: promote and defend human rights and the rule of law, support freedom of information and independent media, and promote accountability and transparency.
The deadline to submit proposals is April 4.

Health reporting trip to Ethiopia accepting applications

New media journalists are encouraged to apply for an all-expense-paid, two-week reporting trip to Ethiopia in June.
Johns Hopkins University’s International Reporting Project will conduct the reporting trip from June 14-27 to investigate the topic of newborn health in Ethiopia. Participants will travel across the country and explore the medical, institutional and social challenges that surround prenatal and postnatal care in Ethiopia.
The trip will cover roundtrip airfare, visa fees, hotel costs, meals and local transportation costs.
Interested applicants must be citizens of France, Germany, India, Malawi, Nigeria, Norway, Senegal, the United Kingdom or the United States in order to be considered. They must also work with new media. Bloggers, influential social media practitioners, and freelance contributors may also apply.
Candidates must complete an application and an essay of at least 800 words describing the types of stories they will pursue during the trip to be considered.
The deadline to apply is April 21.
